The Vegetarian Life: Amico Bio

I never actually talked about this, but I've recently decided to become vegetarian. I've been thinking of doing this for a while, and tried it now and then, just to make sure this is something I really want to do. At the end of last year, I finally made up my mind to do it "full-time". I was so surprised to find out all the possibilities and delicious hidden restaurants. And though I decided not to eat meat and seafood altogether, it didn't make me weak as I thought it would; on the contrary, I feel so much better.

So today, I want to share my latest vegetarian discovery in London -- Amico Bio. A veggie-friendly Italian place in the St Pauls area. The restaurant sources their ingredient freshly from Capua, Italy, and offers a broad range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. Everything is so deliciously authentic. We started our meal with the rice croquettes; filled with vegan cheese and peas. The croquettes were so crunchy and not oily at all, such a major plus for fried food.

在很久以前的一篇文章中,我有提過想要吃素的想法,這段時間除了找了資料,也陸陸續續做了幾個月的嘗試,為的就是確定這真的是我想要的生活模式,以及對健康不會造成任何影響。而在去年年底,我終於下了決定,正式成為 Full time 素食者(笑)從那之後,吃飯與找餐廳多了道手續,當然也增添了樂趣。沒有魚或肉的生活,比想像中簡單,不管是在台灣或歐洲選擇其實也很多。

所以呢,今天要來分享我在倫敦新發現的素食餐廳。不過不用擔心,我所謂的素食,並不是素雞或素肉等等的食品,準確點說,是蔬食餐館。Amico Bio 擅長義式料理,位於倫敦的 St Paul 區域 ,老實說,這是我第一次到這一區。我們第一道菜點的是酥炸燉飯球,裡頭除了米飯,還有鷹嘴豆與素起司(由豆腐製作,口感並無不同)。外層很酥脆,但完全不油膩,以炸物來說真的很加分。

Here comes my favourite dish of the day -- Potato & Beet Gnocchi. The sweetness of the beetroot worked perfectly with their vegan cheese. I also really love the pickled cabbage which brought a refreshing taste at the end. Not to mention the beautiful colour combination of pale pink and yellow...how cute is that? I fell in love with just the look as soon as it arrives.

My friend's tortellini is quite nice as well. I forgot the exact name of the dish, but it came with pesto dressing and vegetable dices like carrot & mushrooms. Though we both agree it could have a bit more seasoning; it is still pretty tasty overall. In the meantime, the staff recommended their house organic red wine. I don't usually drink any alcohol during the daytime, but somehow I was craving for it. The glass complimented their food, it was fruity & smooth and paired beautifully with the dishes served.

接著,就是我當天最愛的一道菜了:馬鈴薯甜菜根麵疙瘩。甜菜根的甜味,中和了起司可能帶來的膩口感。醬汁中還混合了些酸菜,甜酸甜酸的好適合我們亞洲人的味蕾(笑)除了口感好外,我覺得連外表都很討喜,粉嫩的配色,一上桌讓人雙眼跟著一亮,心情大好。

同行友人點的是義大利餃佐青醬;餃子裡包的是蔬菜丁與蘑菇。我們兩個試過後,都覺得味道有些淡,不過整體來說還是道令人滿意的主菜。在用主食的同時,服務生詢問是否有酒類的需求,我很少在白天喝酒(會容易想睡覺),但當天不管是氣氛還時眼前的美食都感覺挺適合,所有就請他推薦。紅酒名忘了,不過有著淡甜的水果口感和香氣。對於品酒這件事是個門外漢,無法給予非常專業的評論;但以個人來說,只要合宜順口就已經算是好酒。況且,和我們當天的主食在口味上搭配起來都合適,也就足夠。

Ending on a high note --  the apple fritters served with a scoop of sweet bread ice cream. Nothing suits a chilly raining Saturday more than a plate of warm fried apple pastries. This one was a lighter version, decently sweet and tangy. Man, it was good. My friend had the warm chocolate cake with vanilla sauce, like all the other choices in Amico Bio, it's nothing too fancy, but definitely delicious enough. I, for one, believe that sometimes it is the simplest food that gives us the biggest comfort.

Lastly, I'd light to clarify the fact that I'm not trying to suggest any of you go vegetarian or vegan, I do respect everyone's lifestyle. This is just a little change of my own life, and I would love to share the journey with you. All that said, vegetarian or not, we're all madly in love with discovering new and tasty places for food. Aren't we all? x

甜點的部分我選了蘋果fritters,不太清楚中文要麽說,網路上好像也沒有準確的翻譯(不過大家如果知道,歡迎告訴我!)簡單來說,很像迷你的蘋果派,不過口味稍微再淡些。當天天氣陰雨,即便在室內還是有點冷,來盤溫熱的 apple fritters 實在剛好。Amico Bio 的 apple fritters 是我目前吃過比較不甜的,另外可能是醬汁加上蘋果內餡的關係,還帶些微酸,很順口。另外,朋友點的是經典的巧克力蛋糕,同樣也是熱熱的上桌,一旁還有一小球的香草冰淇淋,是不敗的美味搭配。往往,我們離開餐館,最能記住的並不是最複雜的技術或擺盤,反而像這樣的質樸好味道,才是讓我們想再訪的主要原因。

最後,我想說,我並沒有要推銷吃素這件事;這是我個人決定做的小改變,也尊重每個人的生活方式,純粹是帶著與大家分享好餐廳的心情來寫這篇文章。況且,吃不吃肉不是重點,畢竟大家喜愛美食的心都是一樣的啊(笑)
