I don't even know where to start. I fell in love with New York big time (again!). Just like Paris, this city seems to be yet another one that constantly gets my heart. The food, the vibe, the museums & galleries, and of course, the beautiful beautiful snow season. Plus, my sister lives there now so I sort of get endless opportunities to fly over and discover all the different areas. Even though this is not my first visit, I'm still in the tourist mode. There's just so many places to see that I always have a little check list in my phone. So without further ado, here are some of my favourite things about this trip!
When I was younger I always dream about living in a city with snow. Unfortunately, there's not much snow in London, nor in Melbourne. But since I travel quite often now, so I still get to live in my snow fantasy every now and then. The night prior our arrival there was a big snowfall, and as you can see, the Big Apple turned into the prettiest winter wonderland.
Believe it or not, this was actually my first MOMA experience. If you can handle the crowd, then visit anytime you want; or else, be there at 10:30am sharp and have the arts all to yourself. We spent a good 2-3 hours at the Museum, though I'd love to stay longer next time. The Unfinished Conversation is a must see, and do check out the How Should We Live? exhibition if you're a modern interior sucker like me.
I've been eyeing on the Petzel Gallery on Instagram long before I planned for this trip. They showcase really unique works from International artist, where I don't see much in other places. It was a pity that we didn't get to witness the We Need to Talk instalment, but the currently showing Sarah Morris collection is great too. Bold colours & geometric structures are things I'm not particularly familiar with, so I walked out feeling extra amazed.
追蹤 Petzel Gallery 是因為他們前陣子舉辦的 We Need to Talk 展覽。
GRAFFITI AROUND WILLIAMSBURG
As our Airbnb apartment was located in Brooklyn, we dedicated an entire day to roam Williamsburg. Starting from the latest by CHLOE branch near the Metropolitan Avenue, we then abandoned our maps and got lost every 5 minutes. It was the best decision ever! If you got a good pair of legs, walk further till the edge of the area, and you'll see some cool small shops aside with loads of graffiti artists doing their magic.
FULL ON TOURIST MODE
Instead of ticking off every must-see spots at once, I plan just 2 or 3 touristy things to do for every visit. Not only because I know I'll be back soon, it also gives me a more flexible schedule. I did all those stuff in the last two days this time. Flat Iron in one, and the World Trade Centre Transportation PATH station & the Fearless Little Girl Statue for the other. Despite all the crowd, the later two were my favourites.
PATH station's unique structure gives the building an amazing blend of shadow and sunlight during day time. And they do have quite a few nice brands, Stuart Weitzman, Sugarfina, Dior makeup...just to name a few. On the other hand, the fearless Wall Street Girl for International Women's Day was originally only set up for a week, but now extended till April 2nd due to it's popularity. All the more reasons to visit, in my opinion.
New York is also a city known for its amazing fine dining scenes. And my favourite have always been Thomas Keller's Per Se. Due to my recent change of diet, I got to try their vegetarian menu this time. I have to say, it is just as good as the regular menu, if not better! I love every single dish so much. I know it's a splurge, but I do really reckon any of you give it a try if you're ever in town! The visual presentation, the taste, the service, and the BREAD, are just too good to pass.
Now, all that said, I'd like to think New York, like many other big cities...comes with a handful of places & areas that are so mundane to local folks, yet breathtakingly beautiful to fresh eyes. I, for, one can keep staring at the streets, shop in Soho & Brooklyn, and binge eat Auntie Anne's Pretzels for hours. Even the 24 hours-packed Time Square gives us something to admire. I mean, who the hell can thought of putting flashing lights and gigantic TV screens over three whole blocks? Let's be honest, its pretty impressive.
Off for now, see you all in a bit. x
